Roiling since the Union Cabinet's October 3 decision to carve out a new state of Telangana, Vizianagaram is under curfew since Saturday night following large-scale violence

Large parts of coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions remained in darkness for the second day on Monday and several trains cancelled with electricity employees on strike amid continuing protests against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Former Chief Minister and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu brought his fight against bifurcation of the state to the national capital when he started an indefinite fast.

Concerned over simmering tension on granting Telangana statehood, the Centre appealed to people to create the environment for healthy dialogue process and assured all regions of AP that an amicable solution that safeguards interests of all will be found.

The appeal by Union Home Minister Sushilkuamr Shinde came even as curfew remained in place in violence-hit Vizianagaram town--the epicentre of the protests in support of "United Andhra". Curfew was clamped on Saturday night.

"We are confident of achieving an amicable solution that gives safeguards to people of all regions in the state," Shinde told PTI in New Delhi after a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh whom he briefed about the prevailing situation in Seemandhra.

Shinde's deputy R P N Singh said there is no scope for "reconsidering" the proposed creation of Telangana.

Shinde's statement came close on the heels of four Union Ministers of Seemandhra region meeting the Prime Minister requesting him to accept their resignations over Telangana statehood but got no assurance.

HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju, Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi, Minister of State for Commerce D Purandeswari and Minister of State for Railways Surya Prakash Reddy, all Congress leaders, met Singh together to press for acceptance of their resignations. They decided not to attend office.

The Seemandhra region as also Hyderabad was reeling under a power crisis with employees of state's electricity generation, transmission and distribution companies on an indefinite strike since yesterday.

According to Power System Operation Corporation of Power Grid figures, as many as three transmission lines of 400 kv and another two lines of 400/220 kv had tripped due to the agitations in Seemandhra region.

The Cabinet sub-committee on employees issues held talks with the leaders of striking power employees but an immediate solution was not in sight. Chief Minister N Kiran Reddy said the continuing power crisis is a matter of serious concern The strike has also forced cancellation of several trains.

"The situation is under control and peaceful. It (curfew) is continuing. We will again study the situation and take appropriate action," DIG (Visakhapatnam Range) P Umapathi said about the prevailing law and order situation.

Naidu accused Congress of playing politics in view of the Lok Sabha polls, but remained ambivalent on Telangana.

"They (Congress party) are treating Andhra Pradesh issue as the internal affair of the party. They are interested in politics, not governance or state or people. They are saying everything in terms of politics. Things are becoming worse day by day," Naidu told reporters in Delhi.

The indefinite fast in Andhra Pradesh by YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy in AP against the bifurcation of the state entered its third day.

Central paramilitary forces and state police were patrolling Kanyakaparameswari temple junction, Kothapeta, Dasannapeta, Gajularega, BC Colony, V K Agraharam and other parts of the town to prevent any fresh outbreak of violence.

Hardly 2,990 MW thermal power was produced as against the installed capacity of 6,090 MW. Similarly, power from the hydel generation stood at 1,694 MW against the installed capacity of 3,937 MW. Several gas-based power plants are also not functioning due to gas shortage.

Protests by the pro-united government employees, who are on strike since August 13, continued.

The Cabinet sub-committee on employees issues held talks with the leaders of striking employees today to resolve the deadlock. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy will meet the representatives of the agitating employees on Wednesday, State's Finance Minister A Ramanarayana Reddy told reporters.

The Chief Minister had yesterday asked employees of Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) from the Seemadhra districts to call off the strike and resume duty considering the ongoing 'Brahmotsavams' at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD).

The officials of the TTD too held discussions with the employees and power supply to Tirumala was subsequently restored.

The Chief Minister had also appealed to the striking employees of power generation, transmission and distribution companies to call off their stir.

There she is! Sunday night, Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, was crowned Miss America 2014. The 24-year-old beauty bested 52 other contestants, one from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, after two hours of swimsuit, evening gown, talent, and interview competitions that aired from Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Below, check out five interesting facts about the 87th Miss America.

1. She’s “making history.”
The last two contestants standing at the end of the competition were Davuluri and Miss California, Crystal Lee, who became the first runner-up. Before the winner was announced, Davuluri said into the microphone: “We’re both so proud. We’re making history right here, standing here as Asian-Americans.”

She was right: Davuluri is the first Miss America of Indian heritage. She was born in Syracuse, New York, to Indian parents.

“I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity,” Davuluri said in a press conference after her win. “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”

Davuluri is also the second consecutive Miss New York to win the Miss America crown, succeeding Mallory Hagan. And exactly 30 years ago, in 1983, Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America.

2. She has already faced controversy.
Davuluri’s win quickly drew congratulations via social media—but also triggered a slew of racist remarks on Twitter from people angry that a woman of Indian descent had won Miss America.

But the winner, whose pageant platform is “celebrating diversity through cultural competency,” didn’t seem bothered. “I have to rise above that,” she said. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”

3. She has brains as well as beauty.
Davuluri graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in brain behavior and cognitive science, earning Dean’s List, Michigan Merit Award, and National Honor Society Award honors along the way. She paid for part of her tuition with pageant scholarships totaling $25,000, which she earned throughout her teens.

Next, she’ll apply to medical school with help from the $50,000 scholarship she won last night. Ultimately, Davuluri hopes to become a cardiologist. Medical aptitude seems to run in the family: her older sister, Meena, is a third-year medical student and her father works as an obstetrician/gynecologist in New York.

4. She has struggled with an eating disorder.
Davuluri has opened up about her battle with bulimia and being overweight. “People who’ve been overweight, especially women, feel like at a moment’s notice we can go back to where we were,” she told the Syracuse Post-Standard in July.

Davuluri said she lost more than 50 pounds before competing in the Miss New York pageant earlier this year. “[Struggling with weight] makes you more sympathetic, more empathetic. You don’t judge. I’ve been there, and if I can pull myself out of where I’ve been, anyone can.”

The subject of beauty also came up during Davuluri’s interview. Judge Carla Hall, one of the hosts of The Chew, asked Davuluri about Julie Chen‘s recent admission that she had plastic surgery to “make her eyes appear less Asian.” “What message does this send to young women?” Hall asked.

Davuluri’s response was confident and seemingly predictive of her later victory. “Unfortunately, I don’t agree with plastic surgery, however, I can understand that from her standpoint,” she replied. “But more importantly, I’ve always viewed Miss America as the girl next door, and the girl next door is evolving as diversity in America evolves. She’s not who she was ten years ago, and she’s not going to be the same person come ten years down the road.”

5. She trained with pros for her talent performance.
Even though she missed her cue to begin her talent performance, Davuluri still pulled off an exciting classic Bollywood fusion dance routine. “It’s the first time Bollywood has ever been performed on the Miss America stage and it’s such an honor for myself, my family and the Indian community, as well,” she said.

Even with 15 years of training in Indian dance, Davuluri took her preparations for Miss America to the next level. Before the pageant, Davuluri flew to Los Angeles to train with So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Nakul Dev Mahajan.

So, what’s next for Miss America 2014? Davuluri will travel to Seaside Heights, New Jersey, to visit the site of last week’s devastating boardwalk fire. Then, she’ll begin her  year-long national speaking tour, during which she’ll traveling about 20,000 miles a month to a different city every other day to promote her platform.

“It was not surprising, knowing my granddaughter’s determination and talents,” Davuluri’s grandmother, Koteshwaramma Choudhary, told Rediff.com of her granddaughter’s win. “I am immensely happy for my granddaughter as it is a great achievement. She finally reached her dream goal. But I know she will not rest and will go further ahead.”

Actor Manjula Vijayakumar, who acted in more than a hundred films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, died on Tuesday morning. She was 59 and is survived by her husband and actor Vijayakumar and three daughters, Vanitha, Preetha and Sridevi. 

Doctors at Sri Ramachandra Medical College hospital, where she was admitted last Wednesday after a fall, said the actress died following renal failure. 

"Her whole family was with her when she died," said actor Arun Vijay, her stepson from Vijayakumar's first marriage.

 

"She lost consciousness this morning," he added. 

Actor Khushboo, a close friend of the family, was present by Manjula's bedside when she breathed her last. "She was the most beautiful soul. I will never forget her. She was instrumental for my marriage. I remember I had gone to her house for a New Year party to ring in the millennium. Sundar and I were not married then. In fact, we had broken up. But we had gone to the party together. She smeared some kumkumum on my forehead and said we would be married in three months," said Khushboo. 

"Sundar and I got married in the following March. Manjulamma has been part of our lives all these years," she added. 



Director KS Ravikumar, who cast Manjula in his five Tamil movies, said the reason why he had chosen her was not just because she was a great performer but also because he was her fan. 

"She was large-hearted," said Ravikumar. He said the actress presented him with a gold dollar from a chain she was wearing as soon as she had seen his movie 'Sakthivel' (1994), in which she had a supporting role. "She detached the gold pendant, which had a picture of Lord Venkateswara on it, and just handed it to me saying she loved the movie," said Ravikumar. 

Born on September 9, 1953, Manjula made her debut in Gemini Ganesan-starrer 'Shanthi Nilayam' (1969), but the movie that shot her to fame was 'Rickshawkaran'(1971), starring MGR. She continued to bag lead roles till the late 70s and then appeared in supporting roles. 

Manjula performed with legends like late Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and M G Ramachandran as well as present stars like Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth. She essayed memorable roles in Tamil movies like 'Ulagam Sutrum Valiban,' (1974), 'Ninaithathai Mudippavan' (1975), 'Anbe Aaruyire' (1975) and 'Shankar Salim Simon' (1978). 

Her famous Telugu movies include 'Jai Jawan' (1970), 'Mayadari Malligadu' (1973), 'Alluri Seetarama Raju' (1974), 'Gunavanthudu' (1975) and 'Vaasu' (2002). 

The cremation is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The bridge spans 42.4km (26.3 miles) to connect the eastern coastal city of Qingdao to the suburb of Huangdao, in Jiaozhou Bay.

State media say the bridge passed construction tests on Monday and it opened to traffic on Thursday, along with an undersea tunnel.

The bridge would easily cross the English Channel, which is 32km wide at its narrowest point.

It is 4km longer than the previous record-holder, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in the US state of Louisiana.

It took four years to build and state media say the project cost over 10bn yuan ($1.55bn; £970m). The bridge is supported on more than 5,200 pillars.

It is expected to carry more than 30,000 cars a day, and will reportedly cut the commuting time between Qingdao and Huangdao by up to 30 minutes.

However, this cross-sea bridge may not hold on to the record as the world's longest.

In 2009, China began work on a bridge linking southern Guangdong province, China's main manufacturing hub, with Hong Kong and Macau.

However, only 35km of that structure - set to open in 2016 - will actually be above water.

Here is the text from actress Jiah Khan's suicide letter allegedly addressed to Suraj Pancholi. This letter was shared to the media by Jiah's mother through their publicists.

"I don't know how to say this to you but I might as well now as I have nothing to lose. I've already lost everything. If you're reading this I might have already left or about to leave. I am broken inside. You may not have known this but you affected me deeply to a point where I lost myself in loving you. Yet you tortured me everyday. These days I see no light I wake up not wanting to wake up. There was a time I saw my life with you, a future with you. But you shattered my dreams. I feel dead inside. I've never given so much of myself to someone or cared so much. You returned my love with cheating and lies. It didn't matter how many gifts I gave you or how beautiful I looked for you. I was scared of getting pregnant but I gave myself completely the pain you have caused me everyday has destroyed every bit of me, destroyed my soul. I can't eat or sleep or think or function. I am running away from everything. The career is not even worth it anymore.



When I first met you I was driven, ambitious and disciplined. Then I fell for you, a love I thought would bring out the best in me. I don't know why destiny brought us together. After all the pain, the rape, the abuse, the torture I have seen previously I didn't deserve this. I didn't see any love or commitment from you. I just became increasingly scared that you would hurt me mentally or physically. Your life was about partying and women. Mine was you and my work. If I stay here I will crave you and miss you. So I am kissing my 10-year career and dreams goodbye. I never told you but I received a message about you. About you cheating on me. I chose to ignore it, decided to trust you. You embarrassed me. I never went out, I never went with anyone else. I am a loyal person. I never met anyone with Karthik I just wanted you to feel how you make me feel constantly. No other woman will give you as much as I did or love you as much as I did. I can write that in my blood. Things were looking up for me here, but is it worth it when you constantly feel the pain of 

heartbreak when the person you love wants to abuse you or threatens to hit you or cheats on you telling other girls they are beautiful or throws you out of their house when you have no where to go and you've come to them out of love or when they lie to your face or they make you chase after them in their car. Or disrespects their family. You never even met my sister. I bought your sister presents. You tore my soul. I have no reason to breathe anymore. All I wanted was love. I did everything for you. I was working for us. But you were never my partner. My future is destroyed my happiness snatched away from me. I always wished the best for you, was ready to invest what little money I had in your betterment. You never appreciated my love, Kicked me in the face. I have no confidence or self esteem left, whatever talent whatever ambition you took it all away. You destroyed my life. It hurt me so much that I waited for you for ten days and you didn't bother buying me something.

The Goa trip was my birthday present but even after you cheated I still spent on you. I aborted our baby when it hurt me deeply. You destroyed my Christmas and my birthday dinner when I came back. When I tried my hardest to make your birthday special. You chose to be away from me on Valentines Day. You promised me once we made it to one year we would get engaged. All you want in life is partying, your women and your selfish motives. All I wanted was you and my happiness you took both away from me. I spent money on you selflessly you would throw in my face. When I would cry for you. I have nothing left in this world to live for after this. I wish you had loved me like I loved you. I dreamt of our future. I dreamt of our success. I leave this place with nothing but broken dreams and empty promises. All I want now is to go to sleep and never wake up again. I am nothing. I had everything. I felt so alone even while with you. You made me feel alone and vulnerable. I am so much more than this."

'Nishabd' fame Actress Jiah Khan body was found  hanging at her Juhu situated Sagar Tarang apartment at early midnight.

The Mumbai Police who is at the residence of the actress is presently searching for Jiah's penned down her last suicide note and has started noting the statements of her maid, watchman and neighbours to figure out who had visited the actress home last.

As per sources, Jiah's was rushed to a private hospital where she was declared dead and her body has been shifted  to the corner court for postmortem at the Cooper Hospital.

Girl next door actress Jiah made her debut opposite Amitabh Bachchan in 'Nishabd' but got recognition in Aamir Khan's 'Ghajni'.

The actress was last seen on the big screen in Sajid Khan's 'Housefull' along with Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Riteish Deshmukh and Lara Dutta.

Nafisa Khan (Hindi: नफीसा ख़ान), also known as Jiya Khan (Hindi: जीया ख़ान, Urdu: جیا خان‎), was a British—Indian[1] actress who appears in Bollywood movies mostly known for her role as in Ghajini.[2] She changed her name to Jiah Khan before making her film debut in Nishabd in 2007. In 2012, she changed her name back to Nafisa Khan.[3] She was found dead in her apartment after supposedly hanging herself on 3rd June 2013.[4]

Early life

Nafisa Khan (20 February 1988-4 June 2013) where she also grew up. She is the daughter of Ali Rizvi Khan, an Indian American, and Rabiya Amin, a Hindi film actress in the 1980s from Agra, Uttar Pradesh and most remembered in Tahir Hussain's Dulha Bikta Hai.[5]

Jiah Khan completed her A levels in film studies and literature in London. She also studied at the Lee Strasberg Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, though she quit upon receiving a movie offer from Mumbai.[verification needed]

Career

A 16 year old Khan was to debut in Mukesh Bhatt's Tumsa Nahin Dekha, but backed out when she felt the role was too mature for her and was immediately replaced by Dia Mirza. Two years later in 2006, she debuted in the controversial Nishabd,[6] where she acted opposite Amitabh Bachchan. The film was released in March 2007 to mixed reviews, though Khan was noted for her confidence, attitude, and sex appeal. She also got a "Filmfare Best Debutant" Nomination for her Acting skills.[verification needed]
She appeared alongside Aamir Khan in A.R. Murugadoss's Ghajini, the Hindi remake of its Tamil namesake. She shot for a significant portion of the Ken Ghosh directed film Chance Pe Dance opposite Shahid Kapoor, but was replaced by Genelia D'souza. Despite this, UTV Motion Pictures (who are backing Chance Pe Dance) subsequently signed the actress for a two-film deal; Ghajini producer Madhu Mantena signed her for a 3-film deal shortly after.[verification needed] Khan also appeared as a supporting actress in the Sajid Khan's Housefull as Devika, a woman who cheats on her husband with the boyfriend she wanted to get married to but could not because her father would not approve of a non-Indian son-in-law.

Death


Actress Jiah Khan committed suicide at her Juhu residence on June 3rd, 2013. The 25-year-old actor is learnt to have hung herself inside the house in Mumbai. "She had been depressed for some time due to personal issues, but was keen on returning to acting soon. She was also meeting filmmakers regarding projects," sources close to the actress said. Jiah was brought up in England and had shifted to Mumbai with her mother Rabiya recently. A very good actress.
